Sparkling Sake and Plum Sake revealed at the Restaurant Show in London

 


At the Restaurant Show in London I had the chance to drink and try (taste) lots of new wines and spirits.

I tried the sparkling sake and the plum sake. I like any sake. But these were great. The sparkling is an aperitif. Sparkling, like Champagne and prosecco, so it can be drunk on its own, without being overwhelmed by strong foods, and Japanese food is often bland, or to put it more delicately, delicately flavoured. The plum sake is from the UK which saves on import duty. Sake comes in small bottles, but you don't drink much.

(In Singapore my Japanese friends at the Japanese club insisted on my trying plum wine and the dearer plum wines there were the strongest flavours. Most non-Japanese people would not know the difference and would be equally happy with the milder flavour and very pleased with the better price. In the UK the really strong flavoured plum sake imported from Japan costs more. If you go to a Japanese club or restaurant, look for the plum wine. Be careful, if you are given a menu without prices you may be ordering something expensive - but your polite Japanese friends will assure you that if you would like it, you must have it.)

Look out for sparkling sake and plum wine in oriental restaurants in London and the UK. You drink only a thimbleful, very elegant, unless you chuck it down at once - I suggest you sip elegantly.  Sake is usually strong stuff - check the label. You soon have a smile on your face.

Wine and dine in Wales on Welsh Honey, Whisky and Chocolate

 Wales has wonderful food, the familiar Welsh lamb from the green valleys, watered by the Westerlies, the winds coming in from the sea. I used to drive every year from London to Wales along the M4 which took about four and a half hours.  I have also been on the train from Paddington station many times. It is exciting to get on a train and see the signs in English and Welsh (which I have been learning on Duolingo). On the way home I buy Welsh cakes on the train. They look like squashed scones. If only I could keep them until I get home and heat them up. Swansea Seaweed But Wales also offers the unusual, seaweed from Swansea, which as the city's name suggests, is on the coast.  Welsh Wine and Alcohol Dylan Thomas was well known for enjoying a drink or two or more at Welsh pubs (short for public houses).   Wine labels tell you about the style of wine, its colour, white, black, red, pink, orange. Sometimes the grape, the proportion of grapes in a blend, the flavour (such as a fruit or nut).
